Packing for the Karakoram — what really matters

After five years of running trips into the northern areas, here's the short list of what to actually bring (and what to leave at home).

The temptation when packing for the Karakoram is to bring everything. Don’t. The most experienced travellers on our expeditions are always the ones with the smallest bags.

Layers, not bulk

You’ll experience a wider temperature range on a single day in Hunza than you will across an entire week in Krakow. We’re often at +25°C at 11am and +2°C by 8pm. Light merino base layer, mid-weight fleece, shell jacket. That’s the whole system. Skip the heavy puffer unless you’re sleeping at Fairy Meadows.

Boots over shoes

Even on cultural trips, you’ll walk on uneven cobblestones in old forts and gravel paths along irrigation channels. Trail runners are fine; sneakers will hurt by day three.

The water bottle question

Tap water is not safe. We provide filtered water at every accommodation but you’ll need your own bottle for the road — a 1L Nalgene or any reusable bottle is enough. Skip the camp filter unless we tell you otherwise.
